Lights! Camera!
Action!
At some of the
NJ Free Poker host locations, you may see a camera crew
videotaping the games. Please treat them nicely they are our
friends, and are there with our permission.
One of our newer members, Tim O’Donnell, appreciated not just
the game, but also the wide variety of great people who come
out every night to play at NJ Free Poker. He was so
intrigued, that he has put together a team of professional
camera and sound engineers, to create a documentary on …us,
and more importantly… you!
Tentatively titled, “Player Down”, they will be shooting our
games, interviewing our players, and generally following us
around for the next few months. Aside from some additional
lighting, their presence will have hardly any effect on the
tournaments, and after a short time, you will hardly notice
them, as true poker players aren’t easily distracted,
regardless.
Tim, an avid poker player himself, also has an extensive
background in filmmaking and production, so this is the
perfect marriage of his two greatest passions. He described
the overall concept of the project like this:
“We’re going into this to try and capture the spirit of the
players, the action of the games, and the wide variety of
different lives that the players here represent. While we
have an overall direction, the nature of a documentary is
just to be there, and see what happens,” said Tim. “Lisa and
Del have given us access to shoot the games, interview the
players and dealers, and work closely with everyone. So, if
we’re at your game, just carry on as usual, and try and
ignore us sticking cameras in your faces. We are hoping to
create a story that will be interesting to audiences of ESPN,
LIFETIME, HBO… who knows”
In addition to the filming of the games and general player
interaction, NJ Free Poker has chosen a cross-section of
players, for the first set of personal interviews, regardless
of their poker ability. Please do not be offended if you are
not among them. NJFP has more than 3000 registered players,
and obviously, cannot include everyone.
More players will be asked for interviews as we go, and if
you do participate in the interviews, you will be asked to
sign a separate Release and Authorization, with Tim’s
production company (Player Down Productions), although the
NJFP Membership Agreement already allows for us to film all
players for purposes such as this.
This documentary is not about how well you play poker, or how
often you make the final table. It is not necessary for you
to dress or act any differently than you normally do, just be
yourself, since that is what inspired the making of this film
in the first place…
But, remember, as Norma (Gloria Swanson) declared in Sunset
Boulevard, "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close
up."
